How to Get Rid of Impurities on Face
28 Aug DIY Detox Facial: Removing Topical Skin Impurities
When it comes down to it, life is busy. Between working, running a household, and trying to make sure you get enough rest to feel like you're living a balanced life, many people eat on the go or make unhealthy lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, these kinds of choices can take their toll on not only your health but also your skin, contributing to the development of acne and that dull, dry look we all sometimes get.
There are countless detox diets and juice cleanses that claim to help your kidneys and liver remove toxins from your body more effectively, but what about a detox for your body's largest organ — your skin?
Since the body doesn't eradicate toxins through the skin, detoxing the skin is more about protecting your skin from damage caused by topical impurities, such as excess oil, dirt, and pollution, while cleansing the body from the inside through a healthy diet and sufficient hydration. However, many professional beauty spas offer facial treatments with detoxifying properties.
What is a detox facial treatment?
Quite simply, a detox facial treatment helps to remove topical impurities from your skin, including pollutants, dead skin cells, and excess oils to help revitalise your skin and improve its overall health, giving your face that fresh, dewy look. By cleansing the skin, purifying it, and rebuilding skin texture, it promotes oxygenation, increasing the production of collagen and elastin, two important proteins that help maintain the structure and vibrancy of our skin.
Why are people doing it?
Detox facial treatments have become trendy in recent years, contributing to their overall popularity and people with problematic, oily, and acne-prone skin will benefit the most from these facials. They reduce sebum production, making skin less oily while repairing damage caused by poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, or smoking. Not only will your skin feel better, but it will look better, too.
When should you do a detox facial?
Depending on your skin type and daily cleansing routine, it is recommended you do a detox facial every one to three months. You don't need to go for a professional treatment each time either, as we've got the perfect natural DIY solutions so you can enjoy a spa day from the comfort of your own home.
Our top 3 DIY detox facials
Before applying a mask, drape a towel over your head above a bowl of recently boiled for about 10 minutes to open your pores. This will allow the mask's ingredients to penetrate the pores and extract as many impurities as possible.
Here are our top three DIY detox face masks:
1. Chocolate coffee mask
- 1 teaspoon of instant coffee/ coffee grounds
- 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- Plain yoghurt (to make a smooth paste)
The coffee grounds scrub away dead skin cells and caffeic acid is said to boost collagen levels. Combine the ingredients and apply the mask, leaving it on for 15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water to reveal beautiful, glowing skin.
2. Oat and vinegar mask
- 3 tablespoons of rolled oats
- ¼ cup of hot water
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
Mix everything together, adding the apple cider vinegar, which has antibacterial properties, at the end, and applying the mask while it is still warm. Leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water for soft, smooth skin.
3. Honey coconut mask
- 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
- ½ tablespoon of raw honey
- 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay
The bentonite clay draws out impurities from your skin, while the honey and coconut oil will leave your skin moisturised and soft to the touch. Leave the mask on for about 15 minutes and remove with warm water or a damp cloth for refreshed skin.
To really detox your skin from the inside out, take a break from applying make-up for a few days to give your skin a break, just as we give our bodies a break from fatty foods, sugar, or alcohol. Pair this with a cleansing and purifying mask, drinking plenty of water every day, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and you're well on your way to a healthy, glowing skin.
